How often should you meet with a nutrition coach?

Every 4 weeks is typical, and anywhere from 1 week to 3 months is common.

Structured programs often meet weekly or every other week at the start, then about once a month to keep going. Those schedules come from programs led by dietitians, such as the CDC’s year-long program, which meets weekly for six months and monthly after that.

People often come sooner with

  • Starting a new plan
  • A goal with a date, like an event

And later with

  • Habits that have settled in
  • A monthly check-in to stay on track

Ask your coach

This is a typical range, not advice for you. Your coach will suggest what fits you, and it often changes as you do.

Where this comes from

  1. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Position paper: medical nutrition therapy for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. 2018. For weight loss it calls for at least 14 dietitian visits over 6 months, then at least monthly visits for a year to maintain, and for type 2 diabetes three to six visits in the first 6 months plus at least one a year after.
  2. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. National Diabetes Prevention Program: details about the program. The year-long lifestyle change program meets weekly for the first 6 months and monthly for the second 6 months.
  3. US Preventive Services Task Force. Weight loss to prevent obesity-related illness in adults: behavioral interventions. 2018. Effective behavioral weight loss programs mostly ran 1 to 2 years with 12 or more sessions in the first year, often an intensive phase followed by a lighter maintenance phase.
