How often should you see a personal trainer?
Every week is typical, and anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks is common.
2 daysUsually week2 weeks
Health guidelines say adults should do strength training at least two days a week. Many people see a trainer once or twice a week and train on their own the other days.
People often come sooner with
- Learning new movements, where good form matters
- A goal with a date
- Getting started after time off
And later with
- A routine you can follow on your own
- A check-in to change your program as you progress
Ask your trainer
This is a typical range, not advice for you. Your trainer will suggest what fits you, and it often changes as you do.
Where this comes from
- US Department of Health and Human Services. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition. 2018. Adults should do muscle-strengthening work for all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week, plus 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity.
- American College of Sports Medicine. Resistance training position stand (summary). 2026. ACSM's 2026 position stand says to train all major muscle groups at least 2 days per week and build up gradually.
- Lacroix A, et al. Supervised vs. unsupervised training programs on balance and muscle strength in older adults. Sports Medicine, 2017. In adults 65 and older, supervised strength and balance training beat unsupervised training, and the authors suggest supervising about two of every three weekly sessions.
